Sailing large

Sailing large means running before the wind, or sailing directly away from the wind.

Sails and Furling

Sails are aerofoils which generate the thrust needed to move the boat.

The Suez Canal and the Cutty Sark

The Suez Canal and the Cutty Sark. The canal was opened in 1869, allowing ships to travel between Europe and Asia, without having to round the Cape of Storms at the bottom of Africa. The canal is about 100 miles long, and almost 1,000 feet wide at its narrowest point. The canal spelled the death-knell for the Tea-Clippers like the Cutty Sark.
