Parachute drogues

Parachute drogues are dragged behind a boat in storms, to slow it down.

Port and Starboard, Forwards and Aft

Forward is towards the bow and aft is towards the stern. Facing forwards, starboard is the RHS, port is the LHS. In old terminology, larboard was used instead of “port.”

Prize Money

Prize Money was paid by the Admiralty as a means of encouraging zeal in their Captains. The amount was calculated by the Navy Board and was shared by the crew and other officials according to a formula based on rank.
