Ship’s magazine

Ship’s magazines were located in the lower reaches of the ship below the waterline, often near the Orlop, and, ideally, were dry areas removed from sources of fire or heat.

Fearnought screens covered the doorways when the ship was cleared for action – a heavy cloth of felt – to prevent sparks from reaching the powder.
