Bitts: Josh sees that, “Coils of rope hang on bitts on the mast and rail, and already a few black spots of tar have fallen from the yardarms to mar the snowy surface of the deck.” Bitts are the small pieces of wood shaped like a tube which protrude from the mast and rails and over which a coiled line can be hung.
