Grog

Grog was a mixture of rum and water and was served to every man and boy in the Navy twice a day. The alcohol was originally brandy, but rum was used after Britain conquered Jamaica in 1687. In 1740, Admiral Vernon, in an effort to reduce the consumption of alcohol, ordered the ration diluted. The men received a pint of grog with each serving: half a pint of rum diluted with a half-pint of water; the boys a half of this.
